This phrase, uttered from the mouth of my middle child, grants me entry into his imaginative world. Ever since he was very small, Grant has had the most wonderful imagination and imaginary friends.
When he was was about three years old Grant had several imaginary friends he played with who, over the years, developed names and interesting characteristics. A couple of his favorite friends were Cha-Cha and Bum-Bum. Cha-Cha was a pretty wild guy who got away with a lot of crazy stuff, like eating nothing but candy all day, staying up all night, and throwing down some wild tricks on his motorcycle. We learned that anything Cha-Cha was doing was Grant's secret desire to do himself. Bum-Bum was the naughty friend who hurt people by throwing them down and karate chopping them. Grant would often assume the imaginary role of "Crank," who was a wild and crazy motorcyle rider himself. Crank, Cha-Cha, and Bum-Bum have had many extraordinary adventures over the years, let me tell you.
While Cha-Cha and Bum-Bum have mostly faded into the past, Cha-Cha does make an appearance every so often; most notably when he drives by on his obnoxiously loud Harley or when Grant sees him laying down some sweet tricks on his bike/skateboard/snowboard/etc. Nowadays Grant often assumes new imaginary roles and conjures up adventures with other friends. Sometimes he comes to me and says, "Hey, Mom! Wanna meet one of my friends?" That's when he exits the room, dons any appropriate attire his new persona might need, and reenters the room to introduce himself to me.
I never know who I'm going to meet. Grant friends have ranged from Ninja Nick (most recently), Michelangelo the Ninja Turtle, various rockstars, Jango Fett, or any other superhero or cool dude he can think of to create. His friends usually introduce themselves, ask me what my name is, show me a few of their signature moves, and then run off to fight bad guys or rescue someone or wreak havoc somewhere in the house. It's quite an adventure.
And as seemingly destructive and imposing as Grant's friends might appear, I enjoy their visits. They can be helpful too. Sometimes they'll come by to help Grant with his chores or to convince him his mom isn't so terrible when she wants him to clean his room. Even Cha-Cha has a clean room. Well, maybe. Sometimes. Actually, probably not. Since Cha-Cha is Grant's inner ego, he probably has a messy room all the time. Cleanliness is not something Grant frets about. Maybe it's Bum-Bum who has a clean room. Or maybe it's my imaginary friend who has a clean room.
At any rate, imaginary friends are welcome here. I've enjoyed getting to know the ones who've visited so far. I can't wait to see who else will show up.

That totally sounds like Madelyn! Her imaginary friend, Florna and her little brother, Sis, were entertainment for years. I hated Florna's mom, though. She was too perfect and never made Florna eat vegetables or turn off the tv. I got compared to her constantly.
ReplyDeleteSadly, Florna and her family disappeared around the age of five. Enjoy Grant's friends while they stick around.
