Every few years, Oregon has a beautiful winter that satiates my disgruntled feelings regarding her lack of winter snow. We've waited since 2008 for an extended winter storm. Five days ago, it came.
Winter weather makes me realize we hardly have enough of the proper snow gear to go around. But, once we rounded up enough gloves, snow pants, hats, and coats, we were ready to go. And, once the kids realized they would stay warm if properly bundled, they were ready to stay outside for hours. They even stayed out well past dark.
We spent our time sledding, snowball fighting, crying from being hit in the face with snowballs, "snowboarding", and sled jumping. Some of our ideas worked better than others. The snow that fell was very dry and powdery, which is unusual for our area. On day two we were able to finally build a snowman, since the snow moistened somewhat from the freezing rain that fell for a while. The snowman lasted about a half hour before Kyle destroyed him. Sometimes it's just as much fun to destroy something as it is to build it.
I love storms like this because they last for several days and we can really enjoy it. Since our area doesn't get deep snow too often, we are underequipped to plow the roads and make the world function. That means we get days off of school, the town is pretty much shut down, and everyone is free to play and have fun. So, that's just what we did!
